We searched all across the United States to crown a winner for Sway’s Universe.com’s first annual Wake Up Show Rap Battle. Rules were simple: freestyle. Fans voted, and our guest panel voted — ultimately, these six talented rappers (M.O.E, Yancy Deron, Dre Bill, D.A.GO, Chris Young and Mitch Littlez) made it to the final round — battling live on-air on Sway in the Morning on Sirius XM’s Shade 45.
One of these MC’s will win the title, thousands of dollars and a single with a well known producer. Who wins? Comment below with your thoughts. The winner will be announced Monday, March 4th on the Wake Up Show on Shade 45 at 5pm PST/ 8 pm EST

Yo everybody, let me bring something to your attention first of all. This whole wake up show rap battle was a big helping hand from sway and the rest of the crew for all of these artists. Not only did they post all of them on the website, they tweeted all of the artists and promoted them on the site for weeks after weeks. yes i know because i follow sway. that alone deserves a big thank you to sway because he has been in this game for decades and seen the best of the best. They made sure they stated the artists names and where they were from and throughout the battles, sway kept mentioning their names and hyping it up. That was a real person move right in front of our own eyes. Now for the battle part of it, you know im going with my mothafucking guy Dre bill! Champaign il was absolutely in the building and standing tall. Im from Champaign and i watched this guy move his feet from day one and he always seems to do bigger and better every single goddamn time. seriously, i applaud all the artists for making it to that point. Its only right that my bro dre bill gets this, not because we are from the same city but simply because dedication and motivation is a skill that most people lack in this game. I have seen dre on news stations, bet awards and the whole nine. M.O.E. had the best written flow but not good enough to get top spot. I still fuck with dude heavy but didn’t see any creativity and originally to make him the best dude for the battle. He reminds me of Murda Mook. Yancy took the W. His delivery and lyrical content was the not typical GrindTime style. He was witty with the flow, creative throughout both rounds and the only one who freestyle about their opponent at that moment. Listen I ain’t with all this internet thugging but if you actually watch the battle, this Yancy characters says after the first round “I want to freestyle, yea I don’t like the written shit.” Which clearly shows that his first round was written (which was obvious already) and once he realized he couldn’t hold a candle to M.O.E’s written lyrics he got rattled and decided Ima try to win this thing off of just the premise that I am freestyling. Which he didn’t because his second verse was still half written and trash. I actually respect what you did homie b/c I would of quit. M.O.E has my vote. I have read all the comments but it is clear to me that most of you are one sided in why you vote for Yancy. Fact is whether its OTD or pre-written anyone who says “hold on a minute”, “I like this beat so ima ride with it for a bit” or “eh, eh, ok i’m going in” is OBVIOUSLY thinking about what he is about to say meaning it was not really OTD because Yancy took about a minute before he started rapping each time. When I think of OTD I think ok he is just going to start spitting and letting us all see him real talent but after he started and then said “BOOM” it was clear he didn’t have much talent. Sure! First, it’s not a essay contest. It’s a freestyle rap battle. The concept of freestyling is the ability to speak on a variety of topics while keeping the main focus of your message. Because this is a rap battle, bars (punch lines) mean everything! What you and others who don’t follow true hip hop are referring to is Off The Dome (OTD) capabilities which is a component to freestyling. Not the equivalent. That said, with $2k on the line and a chance to launch a major rap career, all contestants are required to put forth their BEST material regardless of whether it was pre-written or OTD. Because of this clear fact, M.O.E is the clear winner. It’s really that simple.

Out of all 3 of these battles there is one noticeable stand out among the artists. that stand out is Mitch Littlez. he is the diamond in the rough. Mitch sounds original to me while Chris sounds like he is just rapping with no substance to his lines. KO’d chris young in the first round. The line “Iverson kriss kross kross chris” WOW. i then googled the kid and DAMN he has put in that work. If i were a label or financier looking at these artists, I would invest in Mitch Littlez.

Mitch littlez had a nicely written first rhyme but it was by no means a KO. In fact Chris young seemed to have KO’d Mitch in the second round. It looked like Mitch 100% fell apart in the second round because he actually needed to freestyle and his abilities couldn’t match up to Chris youngs. After the battle when Mitch finished his below par second verse Sway even said “you never know what’s going to happen in a battle, got to get back on that horse.”. This comment was in reference to how little Mitch fell off and how he got stumped/shook.

CHRIS YOUNG hands down. He is the only one freestyling the whole time. I respect Yancy for coming in with a freestyle for the second verse, but everyone else was doing written raps for both rounds. I don’t blame them really, because I would never be able to freestyle like that, but at the end of the day, this is a FREESTYLE battle, and because of that, Chris should definitely take the title. He is the winner by far in my eyes.

Freestyling is the ability to rap on a variety of topics while keeping the main focus of your message. ANYBODY who’s been watching battles for as long as I have knows that for a fact. I can take you back to the DMX vs. Jay-Z days or even back when KRS One battled Kool G Rap. Those were Rap Battles and EVERYTHING was written on both ends because all individuals knew what was at stake. Sway knows this and it’s the same thing here. OTD is a component of freestyliing the same way the written aspect of it is. So even if you wanted to make an argument that ALL of M.O.E’s lyrics was written (which I don’t agree with) it’s irrelevant as the battle clearly states it’s a freestyle rap battle vs. Off The Dome Freestyle Rap Battle. I also feel you and others are confusing Yancy’s lack of delivery with actual OTD capabilities. I still have yet to hear a line that made me feel like “oh yeah, this dude is really going in off the dome”. You can’t give me a line of his that couldn’t have been recycled for other contestants. You say I’m shinning light on parts where it’s looking very dark and I can echo the same statements for you lol. You and others giving this dude Yancy waaayyyy too many passes right now and as fans of true hip hop you should already know the concepts of freestyling and the fact that OTD is a component of it, not the equivalent. Yancy Deron hands down. M.O.E, nice try but you just didnt have that fire and raw energy Yancy set off everytime the floor was his. His delivery was so much more powerful and his style of rap is unique and unexpected. You both have heart and passion, but Yancy’s voice and freestyle words won this battle. I appreciate you actually paying attention to what I mentioned in my post. But no flaws on my part. As I said earlier, a rap battle of this caliber requires a combination of both written and non-written material. The best of the best do it every day from Cassidy to Meek Mills or Drake and Common or even back to the days of Smack DVDs where Murder Mook was battling Jay Millz. There’s no secret and/or shame to that which again, I feel M.O.E leveraged the best here. Also, I’ve played back all of Sway’s tapes in reference to this battle and neither him or his camp ever stated that this battle needs to be OTD. So even if everybody came with fully written battles, I personally don’t see an issue with that.
Yes, I left both Mitch Littlez and Chris Young out of the convo for the fact that Mitch choked which from the beginning of time for rap battles has always been an automatic lost. And your boy Chris Young was slaughtered in the first round and would’ve been in the second round too if Mitch didn’t choke, but he did.
You point out that Yancy “did freestyle”. I agree with you but feel he had just as much freestyle as M.O.E did. You used the line of “Is this black my nigga? Is that chap my nigga?” as your defense and proof that Yancy was freestyling? Take a look at all of the contestants. They all got on black so that’s easily a written line that would’ve worked on anybody that day. The same can be said for 80% of Yancy’s rhymes. Now again, I’m not saying M.O.E went in there and ALL of his rhymes were OTD but he definitely throughout lines about what dude was wearing literally and incorporated that with his flow. As for the detergent line, I listen to a lot of hip hop and I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve heard that line which is why I know it was definitely written.
As for the Super Bowl line, I think the crowd was literally laughing at the dude, not with him. I hate to speak negatively on anyone that has the talent to step up in front of thousands of viewers and perform but that truly was a garbage line. I agree with you on the line Yancy throughout for Chris, he gets points for that but honestly, that’s really where it stops for me.
To each is own and I appreciate you speaking up for what you believe in and actually trying to make sense out of it. I’ve been watching rap battles for a long time now and have seen many losers win for the fact that they have a larger # of supporters which then undermined the talent of the clear victor. I just hate to see that happen again here on a site I visit and watch so frequently. I am a little shocked that you would put Chris Young in front of any of the contestants though being that he basically won his battle by default lol. I’m sticking with my vote for M.O.E and truly hope Sway takes control of the votes.
To close this out, yes, the winner gets something like $2k and a chance to work with a top/well known producer close to Sway.

Wow, I love it! Everybody on here trying to find a voice like DAGO lol. Dude didn’t even beat his opponent but he won? Stop it! Let me provide the misguided with a lesson of rap battles. One – no body freestyles off the dome when there’s $2500 on the line and the chance to launch a major rap career. As a result the best provide a combination of both written material and off the dome (OTD) capabilities to display creativity as both a rapper and artist. Two – this is a battle so bars mean everything!!! Lastly, like in sports there are those who are ok, then good, then great. Those who are ok, rap. Those who are good, rap and have a decent delivery. Those who are great, rap, have excellent delivery, excellent cadence, excellent bar-to-bar coordination (BBC) and image. With that lesson in mind, let us not “speculate” on which of the three rappers/artists won here (DAGO, M.O.E, Yancy) but let’s prove it!
DAGO: Compliments for performing with a lost voice. But here are the facts, absolutely everything was written. Had more time than both M.O.E and Yancy to spit which was an advantage we’re not talking about. And when you play the tape back and listen to Dre Bills punch lines, you’ll find that he actually lost the battle. To mention him as a winner here is ludicrous and no, I’m not talking about the rapper.
Yancy: Easily had the toughest battle out of all contestants so give him props for that. He leveraged the combination of both written and OTD capabilities with his freestyle so compliments for that as well. But yes, I said written. Proven examples are below. At the end of the day, he didn’t have any real bars to deliver. Just a flow that he tried his best to keep. Lastly, his whole second verse was written and he did not have enough material to even finish the time allotted to him.

M.O.E: He demonstrated perfection of the combination between both written and OTD capabilities while maintaining cadence, delivery and bar-to-bar coordination. If you check the tape again, he was literally about to pick apart ALL contestants of the battle. Written or not, that’s a challenge nobody else was prepared for. He was tasked with going first in the battle which is always the hardest place to be and still destroyed Yancy with BBC. Outside of that, he was really the only contestant that both Sway and Heather B and other A&R’s in the background reacted to during all battles. In addition to that, a number of callers called in and co-signed on him being the clear winner. Some examples of the bars he spit that none of the contestants could compete with are below.
“You a fraud, your mom gave birth to a liar”
“Shade 45 and son got a shady flow, look at this nigga face, damn I’m glad we on the radio”
“You got a Cannon (Nick Gannon) for publicity, you worse than Mariah (Mariah Carey)”
My message to Sway – As a citizen of the Sway in the Morning show, I commend you and your team on a job well done for putting together a well coordinated rap battle! Haven’t seen one this good in a long time! Sway, you’re a real dude that listens to real music with respect for real artists. In short, real recognize real. That said I hope and pray you step in and do what’s right here and not allow the misguided and ignorant to rob a victory from the clear winner here, M.O.E. Not only would this be morally wrong but would ultimately be damaging for future Wake Up In The Morning rap battle ratings and views for the show which is something I would personally hate to see as we need more shows like yours. Yea both had dope bars but the title states freestyle and as far as that goes M.O.E. clearly states his shit is written. Granted his writtens are nice but gun play gets you so far. Yancy brought flow style and entertainment. That’s what music is about. His bars were universal (I.E. super bowl blackout) witty and direct. Not to mention a stated freestyle for round 2. Mitch Littlez no questions about it…you can tell Mitch went in there and went off the top…he caculated his first round based on the beat which was played and the second round you can see how much decided to switch up and just decide to start going in on chris…this dude chris young spit bars that weren’t specifically aimed at anyone with minor references to mitch…anyone can memorize raps and spit them like they supposedly freestyling on the spot…Mitch calculated his opponent and destroyed him on the first round. the second round was funny as hell and Mitch got people laughing. Chris Young you can obviously tell was so concentrated on spitting what he wrote prior but just making it conform to the beat. A battle should be judged by going in on a dude on the spot without any pre written memorized bars. All the best battles are when the dude goes in on the other dude to mentally mess with their head while making it funny. Mitch won.
