0:00
we we're so happy to have her here today
0:01

0:04
song It Kills Me from her past uh when
0:07
she was signed to a record label now
0:08
she's independent she got a a new
0:11
project called Say Yes she's just
0:14
magnificent incredible and I need some
0:17
of you folks that sit in it y'all ever
0:19
watch Purple Rain who seen Purple Rain
0:22
you seen the scene in the audience where
0:24
Prince is performing and the audience
0:25
just looking like this
0:28
that's how you look okay so give us some
0:30
energy please make some noise she's our
0:33
headliner i need everybody to stand up
0:36
give a standing ovation right now for
0:38
the one and only Canada's finest
0:41
worldwide Melanie Fiona
0:46
shout out to the to the first two
0:48
artists who performed tonight Jaylen and
0:50
Nal i was listening backstage amazing
0:53
jaylen I I love her voice so much um I'm
0:56
so happy to be here with all of you guys
0:58
this has absolutely been a journey for
1:00
me um as Sway said thank you guys for
1:02
the support we recently did we did a
1:04
duet um I hope you have your vocals
1:06
ready today cuz And it kills me wow see
1:10
if you stay ready you don't got to get
1:11
ready you know what I'm saying okay
1:13
better watch out we we we need we we
1:16
need a round two from our our our uh
1:18
interview that we did viral so get ready
1:20
be on standby um but as he said I did I
1:23
put out a new project it's been the
1:24
first one in a long time it is a six
1:26
song EP named Say Yes yes amen say yes
1:31
to your truth say yes to yourself say
1:33
yes to overcoming your fears say yes to
1:37
everything that you deserve in your life
1:38
cuz it's yours it's just waiting for you
1:40
um and that's how I feel about this
1:41
project and this season of my life um so
1:44
I'm going to perform one of my favorite
1:45
songs off the project this is called
1:47
Mona Lisa Smile because I often feel
1:50
that we talk a lot about men and their
1:52
pride but women have pride too
1:55
and um it's very important that we
1:57
recognize how we carry that and um and
2:00
that we are carrying a lot especially as
2:02
black women so this is Mona Lisa smile
2:08
perfect picture in a broken framing no
2:12
one sees the broken pieces of the
2:14
painting i know you're lying i'm lying
2:18
it's crazy i don't really know why in
2:21
the hell I'm trying to say this if I
2:23
didn't love you I'd walk out that door
2:26
if a man can have his pride while a girl
2:31
I'd rather go to before I let a te drop
2:35
hit this floor i'll never let you see me
2:44
you'll never have to pick me up off the
2:51
i'd rather stand pretty than begging for
2:56
your pity and I'll go a million
3:02
miles wearing this monile
3:09
well if they start coming down
3:16
boy I'm afraid I might drown
3:23
yeah before I lose my mind I'mma let you
3:28
know now i'll go a million
3:32
miles wearing this monies
3:37
but you don't get to say that it's over
3:41
instead of giving up I learned to give
3:43
you the cold shoulder i gave you mine so
3:46
I'm yours and you're mine my heart's on
3:49
the line i love to die even if I could
3:54
get my face to run I'd go around in
4:01
we going to lose it all before
4:14
you'll never have to pick me off the
4:31
miles wearing this one
4:36
at least a smile well if they start
4:45
boy I'm afraid I might drown
4:53
yeah before I lose my mind I'mma let you
4:57
know now i'll go a million
5:05
photo at least a smile
5:19
thank you guys so much
5:22
that's a little classic classic vibe i
5:25
think a lot of my first fans of my first
5:27
project the bridge and the MF Life they
5:29
appreciate that one um you know the
5:32
retro soul is where it all started for
5:33
me so um but you know let's go to where
5:36
it all started for me sway are you ready
5:38
i'm ready and it kills me oh man how
5:43
much I really love you okay
5:46
so much I want How much I want to
5:54
see that's what we needed in the morning
5:55
we needed some champagne let's go let's
6:00
hey you got your microphone know how
6:02
much I really love you don't shy out
6:10
go ahead take it from here Mel
6:14
i got it from here thank you thank you i
6:16
got it from here y'all make some noise
6:19
and those immaculate vocals
6:25
this song changed my life still changing
6:34
i've got trouble with my friends trouble
6:37
in my life problems when you don't come
6:46
but when you do you always start a fight
6:58
i need you to come on home
7:03
i know I'm messing around but who the
7:07
hell else is going to hold me down
7:13
i've got to be on my mind
7:16
to think it's going to work this time
7:21
a part of me wants to leave
7:24
but the other still believe that it
7:31
don't know how much I really love you
7:46
should I grab a sale countless chick
7:50
start some then hang up or should I
7:58
oh baby cuz I want to have his babies
8:09
i don't need to be on my own
8:18
some things I just can't say no
8:24
i've got to be on my mind
8:28
don't think it's going to work this time
8:32
a part of me wants to leave
8:36
but the other side still
8:58
should I pay precious eyes
9:05
to see if you react to my love my love
9:10
my love my love my love oh
9:18
I've got to be on my mind
9:21
don't think it's going to work this time
9:26
a part of me must believe
9:30
and the other side still
9:48
you can y'all sing it out and it kills
9:52
me kills me to know how much I really
9:56
love you to know how much I want
10:19
y'all make some noise for the background
10:22
in LA right now thank you my goodness
10:26
couldn't be done with y'all a little
10:28
special treat this one is for Sway
10:30
specifically because when we did our
10:31
interview on the project I collaborated
10:33
with an incredible rapper by the name of
10:35
Lar Russell and um we did a really fun
10:38
summer joint it's I love it it's just
10:40
feels like summer um and so I want to
10:43
leave you guys with a summer vibe this
10:44
is Make Me Feel Good okay make me feel
10:50
lately feel distracted when you come
10:51
around and I'll be tripping out cuz you
10:54
don't hear me out are you going to turn
10:56
me up or you going to hold me down oh
10:59
yeah yeah yeah yeah i know it's so good
11:03
even when it gets bad and this thing is
11:06
for life there ain't no going back cuz
11:08
you know I'm the best thing that you
11:10
ever had so let's get back to that wait
11:16
we're waiting out the rain
11:19
i know with this joy this pain
11:22
and for your love I will wait
11:28
it won't always be this way even if we
11:35
my love is going to stay the same so
11:37
just make me feel make me feel good like
11:41
a Sunday morning sunset Boulevard sun
11:44
roof open hopping on a train with the
11:47
palm trees blowing i know the play you
11:50
ain't even got to say it just make me
11:52
feel good you know how I want it i don't
11:55
want to wait i just want to jump on it
11:58
ride it slow with the baseline go
12:03
hey you know how you make me feel like
12:06
butterflies and bees when roses start to
12:09
bloom when hummingbirds sing i'm hoping
12:11
that it's you every time my phone ring
12:14
throughout throughout beware that thing
12:17
the sun don't always shine but when you
12:19
smile it feels like it insecure about
12:21
your weight gain i still like it you
12:24
want this to last and you got to
12:26
build like it no it might not last
12:27
forever but at least it feels like it
12:32
we're waiting out the rain
12:35
i know if there's joy this pain
12:38
in for your love I will wait
12:44
it won't always be this way even if we
12:50
my love is going to stay the same so
12:56
like a Sunday morning sunset full of a
13:00
sun roof opening on a tree with the palm
13:03
trees blowing i know the play you ain't
13:06
even got to say it just make me feel
13:08
good you know how I want it i don't want
13:11
to wait i just want to jump on it ride
13:14
it slow with the baseline go away
13:23
i love you guys thank you so much for
13:25
rocking with me an incredible artist and
13:28
she's doing it independent she's doing
13:30
it independent say yes can you say yes
13:34
can you say yes can you say yes yes yeah
13:38
yo how'd I do man no seriously man how
13:41
did I do you did great i did real you
13:43
You definitely redeemed yourself from
13:44
our interview i didn't think I did bad
13:46
in our interview but so so be it you
13:48
know I mean that's how you feel i mean I
13:51
mean I thought we I mean I actually I
13:53
was I was had a lot of grace for you
13:55
that morning you did you were a little
13:56
hard on yourself i was but if you feel
13:58
good about it I feel great about it
13:59
because you told me you felt good about
14:01
it you know what and I still do okay
14:02
still lot i feel I feel even I feel even
14:05
better today though okay thank you a lot
14:07
of inconsistencies here Melbour since
14:10
she performed for us I want to point
14:11
them out it's Gemini season is that it
14:14
y'all flip a lot you know Geminis's
14:16
there's two there's two of them so yeah
14:17
yeah y'all flippity y'all very flippity
14:20
uh there's no Oh my gosh are there
14:23
Geminis's in here put a hand up it's
14:25
just specs you are y'all are strange
14:29
wow you don't even know yourselves
14:32
what's up for my uncle Rob rob stand up
14:34
rob stand up brother Uncle Mark Barb
14:37
stand up you You got these two brothers
14:40
look at that stand up those brothers
14:42
stood up for you they sure did you know
14:44
you hit the soul quotient thank you the
14:47
soul quotient yeah like the Eley
14:49
brothers right there go ahead guys uh
14:51
yes fam and the Grammy goes to Melanie
14:55
Fiona i mean Grammy awardw winning
14:58
grammy awardw winning she is Juno awardw
15:01
winning she is uhhuh and she just sang
15:03
for y'all for free live and gave all the
15:07
live though all of it say yes yes say
15:10
yes say yes yes melanie this is such a
15:14
powerful I told you what I feel about
15:16
the project and it sounds good you're an
15:18
outstanding performer thank you it's my
15:22
favorite part to perform yeah see she
15:24
she's performed with some of the
15:26
greatest from Drake on down you know but
15:29
you had a history before people knew who
15:31
you were how important was that process
15:33
to your success today just the the the
15:36
times that people didn't see you on
15:37
stage on stage it's interesting because
15:40
I think a lot of people are are still
15:41
discovering the my performance element
15:45
um which I think is great you know I
15:47
think it's something that I've always
15:48
prided myself on something that I put a
15:49
lot of um uh dedicated time into
15:53
overcoming certain things it's funny
15:55
because when I was a kid I was terrified
15:57
of singing live like in front of people
15:59
oh yeah at all the family gatherings I
16:01
would make everybody turn around you
16:03
know my my my Caribbean parents would be
16:05
like Melanie come and sing for the
16:06
family and I used to be like just don't
16:08
look at me and now I like love looking
16:12
at people directly when I sing um just
16:15
because I I I understand the importance
16:18
of connection with your audience and and
16:20
truly what it means to really use that
16:24
time to give people something to feel to
16:26
be remembered by um and to remember you
16:29
for so it's it's just that's that's what
16:32
every encounter feels like for me no
16:33
matter whether it's speaking with
16:34
someone interviews on stage it's about
16:38
just the connection and the impression
16:39
you leave with people and they leave
16:41
with you mhm i I love this young lady
16:43
man she even last time she came I don't
16:47
know where mic is working can you hear
16:48
me here hear me that one last time she
16:51
came she she hung out so she could just
16:54
take Heather's cooking home like she
16:56
wanted she had took Heather's food and
16:58
Tupperware um I love this young lady i
17:01
started saying yes to certain things in
17:04
the past recent year m um I had to say
17:07
yes to creating boundaries personal
17:09
boundaries for myself to get to pour
17:12
into myself what I try to pour into
17:15
others i hadn't done that so I started
17:19
saying yes to things I would never say
17:20
yes to i took a vacation by myself yes
17:24
yes mhm yes i went to Aruba yes by
17:28
myself yes you saw the flamingos i can't
17:31
remember the hotel it was I drank by
17:34
myself i said yes to me i'm not a
17:36
drinker um I went to Jamaica by myself
17:40
right i said yes to just giving my and
17:43
it's been the best thing things my
17:45
auntie Katie would tell you you know I
17:47
worked for decades and I don't even when
17:50
I took vacation I took the family on
17:52
vacation you know I didn't never take
17:54
time to myself what What are some of the
17:57
things that personal things that you had
18:00
to recently say yes to that you normally
18:05
i had to say yes to putting out new
18:09
music again yes yeah um you know for all
18:14
the reasons why you know things take
18:17
time i really one of the mantras I've
18:19
been living my life by is you know take
18:21
your time it's yours to take because we
18:24
often feel like we're on a clock of
18:26
somebody else's time there's really only
18:27
one clock we're on if we're given more
18:29
time right say it loud and so for me I
18:32
just really valued the the space to make
18:37
a life as well as making a living um you
18:40
know to build a family to develop my
18:42
personal relationships with myself my
18:44
husband God my family and really get to
18:48
a place where there were times when I I
18:50
wasn't sure if I wanted to put out new
18:51
music again i didn't know how to i
18:54
didn't know where to begin i didn't know
18:55
I didn't know if I had the confidence to
18:57
um it was a real I went through a lot of
18:59
things professionally that really broke
19:01
my spirit and I didn't know how I was
19:03
going to continue and so I I realized
19:06
that once I got to this place within
19:08
like the last year I had to say yes to
19:11
God's calling on my gift because that's
19:14
what I'm here to do that's all we're
19:16
here to do truly um is to answer the
19:19
call of God and the universe and when
19:20
they call and so I was being called and
19:22
I had to say yes through all the hurt or
19:26
the doubt or the I don't know how just
19:29
figure it out just follow through just
19:31
follow through so now this you know the
19:33
project just came out in April and um
19:36
and I'm so proud of myself i'm so proud
19:39
of myself it's not about how many people
19:41
although I would love everybody to
19:43
listen to it it's not about like the
19:45
streaming numbers or the you know the
19:47
biggest rooms it's about that it needs
19:49
to reach who it reaches but that I
19:51
fulfilled a purpose that I had with God
19:53
and so that's that's why Say Yes is so
19:56
important to me melanie Fiona y'all
19:59
thank you guys mel what I deeply
20:02
appreciate about you is your spiritual
20:05
connection you know you believe in a
20:07
higher power but you also believe in the
20:10
higher power within absolutely that you
20:12
possess and I'm wondering when I think
20:15
about our throat chakra right and how
20:18
sometimes it can be underdeveloped it
20:21
can be overused and I'm wondering in
20:23
your personal life during the times of
20:26
doubt where maybe you were kind of
20:28
clammed up you weren't vocalizing
20:31
um your needs right you were swallowing
20:35
a lot just hoarding a lot of feelings do
20:38
you feel like there those times where
20:40
you were unintentionally silent that
20:42
impacted your vocal ability oh absol
20:46
absolutely there was a period of of 2012
20:48
right after the Grammys the Grammy wins
20:52
with CEO right after um it was actually
20:55
just before I toured with Mary J blige i
20:57
just put out my sophomore project the MF
20:58
Life and I'm coming off this extreme
21:00
high the Grammys success highest heights
21:04
like the most fame I had ever
21:06
experienced and my my voice started to
21:09
have challenges and so songs like It
21:12
Kills Me were very very difficult to
21:13
sing i I barely had 30 minutes of of
21:16
singing in me at some shows and I
21:19
remember I would pray and I would pray
21:20
and I would pray i'd be like "What what
21:22
is going on?" And I went to see all
21:23
these vocal doctors and they all were
21:26
like "Nothing's wrong with your vocal
21:27
cords." And it was one doctor that said
21:31
"What kind of a year have you had?" And
21:34
it just opened up a floodgate of
21:38
taking self-inventory
21:40
how was I feeling how was I using my
21:43
voice who was I hanging around and what
21:45
was I saying yes to that I shouldn't
21:47
have been saying yes to you know where
21:48
did I need to say no so that I could get
21:51
to this place to say yes freely it was a
21:54
lot of self-reflection and essentially
21:56
what happened was I was experiencing an
21:59
energetic stress block in my throat
22:02
chakra which is we all have we're made
22:04
of energy and um it directly attacked my
22:07
voice and it made me pause and really
22:11
made me shift my entire perspective of
22:13
how and when and where I choose to use
22:17
the gift of my voice and I couldn't just
22:20
continue to say yes to everything i
22:22
couldn't just show up when I didn't feel
22:23
well i couldn't just take a check
22:25
because it was a good one um it was
22:28
really about God I think pulling me by
22:31
my vocal cords really and saying "Hey I
22:34
gave you this blessing i need you to be
22:36
very mindful about how you use it and I
22:38
need you to be very mindful about where
22:40
you protect how you protect it." And um
22:43
I ended up going through you know just a
22:45
few weeks of like just deep meditative
22:48
work energy healing some acupuncture
22:50
some eastern medicine and within that
22:53
self-realization and actualization I
22:55
toured with Mary Jay Blig and D'Angelo
22:57
for six weeks and had no problems with
22:59
my voice ever again just from answering
23:02
the call ladies and gentlemen give it up
23:04
for Melanie Fiona one time man
